About GEDminer

An independent tool for analysing GEDCOM files, built by a genealogist for genealogists.

Built for genealogists

GEDminer is an independent tool designed for genealogists, first made available online in early February 2026 after earlier private development and research. It was created by a genealogist, specifically for people who work with family history data. It analyses GEDCOM files directly in your browser to help you find gaps, spot errors, explore relationships, trace migration patterns, and uncover new research opportunities.

Whether you are a hobbyist researcher or a professional, the goal is the same: turn raw family tree data into clear, actionable insights you can use to guide your next steps.

Why GEDminer exists

Most genealogy websites are built for building trees, not for analysing them. Once a tree reaches a certain size, it becomes difficult to see where the gaps are, which branches lack sources, or how families moved across regions and countries.

GEDminer was created to fill that gap. It is a dedicated analysis layer that sits alongside your existing genealogy software and subscription, helping you audit your work and discover what to research next without replacing the tools you already use. Take the insights, and improve your tree wherever you prefer to use it most. It's complimentary, not competitive.

Who created it

GEDminer is a solo project built by a professional genealogist who uses it for their own family history research. It grew out of a personal need for better GEDCOM analysis tools and has been shaped by feedback from a growing community of genealogists.

Its development is informed by more than 15 years of professional experience in the genealogy industry, including work with major genealogy platforms, speaking at global genealogy conferences, and postgraduate training in genealogy (with some of that academic research contributing to the rules and structures that provide data analysis). That background helps shape GEDminer's focus on practical research problems, transparent analysis, and tools that reflect how genealogists actually work.

The tool is developed without external investors or advertising partners.

Why you can trust GEDminer with your data

Your original GEDCOM file is parsed entirely inside your web browser. It is never uploaded, transmitted, or stored on any server. Without an account, nothing leaves your device at all.

If you choose to create an account, only the structured analysis results are stored in a managed cloud database, protected by row-level security so only your account can access them. Your original file is still never stored.

There are no tracking cookies, no advertising, and no third-party data sharing. You can read the full details in our Privacy Policy, and you can delete your account and all associated data instantly at any time.

Open and transparent

GEDminer does not use AI to analyse your family tree. Every check is rules-based: date logic, relationship validation, census gap detection, source health scoring, and kinship calculation are all performed by programmed logic, not by machine learning models.

Your genealogical data is never used to train AI systems, and it is never sent to external AI services for processing.
